Axis

In a chart, an axis is a reference line along which values or categories are arranged. A bar chart has two: the categorical axis (where the labels live) and the value axis (where the scale lives). The value axis carries tick marks and gridlines; the categorical axis usually just carries labels. The value axis on a bar chart almost always starts at zero — without that, bar lengths misrepresent the values.
