Categorical data

Data made up of distinct labels — categories — rather than numbers along a continuum. "Region", "Product", "Survey answer", "Color" are categorical. Categories may be unordered (nominal: red, blue, green) or ordered (ordinal: small, medium, large). Bar charts are designed for categorical data: each bar is one category, and the bar length is the value associated with that category.
