Bar vs column

Both terms describe the same family of chart. The Excel convention reserves "column" for vertical bars and "bar" for horizontal; everywhere else, "bar chart" covers both with an orientation toggle. Pick whichever convention matches your audience: finance/Excel users will expect "column"; design and general audiences treat them as one.
